Reminders for a Rainy Day
I love the second of confusion when waking up to a subtle tap dancing above my sleepy head. The simple delight that comes in the moment of realization that it is just my long lost friend, rain, hitting the rooftop, making an appearance once again.
What a familiar feeling, one I didn’t even realize I’d forgotten. California offers a lot of things, the promise of sunshine most days being one of them. But, on this rare, rain-filled day, I’m reminded of why I love these drops so much. I’m reminded of the comfort you find on a gloomy day, a different kind of comfort that never accompanies the sun.
When it’s dark, cold, and wet on the outside, there becomes a rite of passage for your insides to look, to feel the same. It’s the reminder that you too, can have a rainy day. Let your guard down, let your tears fall. Let everything that’s inside, that’s been built up, just pour out. Pour out until it’s just vapor, and all that’s left is dry. It’s a reminder that even the Golden State has a tipping point. A point where it too, needs to unwind a bit. Let go. Needs an escape from the sun.
The rain reminds you that things can be washed away, just like the chalk on your driveway will be. A fresh start can appear after the last cloud has cleared. That forgiveness and redemption are possible, even for you. A rainy day reminds you that if you can find delight, goodness, joy even, in this storm, then you can find it in your own storm too.
Oh, how I missed the feeling of a rainy day.
